在本书中，柯娇燕教授对宏观世界史的编纂理念与实践进行了学术回顾与梳理。从西方的学术发展轨迹来说，对普世历史的思考与实践，经历了从《旧约圣经》中《创世记》对人类起源的宏大叙述，史密斯等人主张的文化传播论，马克思的辩证唯物主义普世历史理论，到今天麦克尼尔、沃勒斯坦、贡德•弗兰克等人对全球史的探索与建构。柯娇燕教授将这一发展过程概括成四大范式，即分流、合流、传染、体系。以此为基础，她进一步评述了当今全球史研究中的不同流派及可能的发展方向。全球史作为新兴的史学流派或分支学科，至今仍处于初步发展阶段，因此也存在着较大争议与分歧，各种研究范式正在形成之中，在这种情况下，柯娇燕教授从学术回顾入手，从宏观世界史的学术传统来理解什么是全球史，具有启迪意义。这从另一个方面也告诉我们，全球史并不是西方史学家们在当今全球化背景下的突发奇想，而是有其学术的历史与根基。
